Mycoplasma control is ENTIRELY based on prevention and not treatment. Once pigs are coughing, no treatment will look good. Clinical response will be absolutely poor. We need to be IN FRONT of the clinical disease. Concepts: Vaccine works to stop coughing if placed in correct timing. It does NOT work to reduce shedding of the organism. Recent Dr. Eileen Thacker and Pat Halbur data suggest all tested companies work. Some work better than others, though not with statistical significance. Respisure is still my choice as we begin a Mycoplasma vaccination program. We know that two M. hyo vaccines without PRRS or Circovirus involvement will work if placed early enough to stop coughing. Take a rectal thermometer with you if you are looking at finishing pigs. Mycoplasma does not cause fever. SIV does. PRRS does. Other bacterial pneumonia does. Aureomycin placed at 10mg/lb/day for 10 days will prevent coughing from M. hyo if placed and pulsed prior to when coughing normally appears. (Tim C. - - Clasing?) I really like pulsing 10mg/lb/day 10 days every 4 weeks if respiratory disease is present in late nursery or grower or finisher. Aureomycin decreases shedding significantly. Control of Myco is important if PCVII or PRRS are present or if they’re not. Only in M. hyo negative flows do we not address M. hyo. Sow herd control (with medication) and incoming gilt acclimation/vaccination/medication help decrease M. hyo coming through with the piglets. If we have M. hyo showing up in the nurseries, we need to look at sow herd control and especially incoming gilt methods. If you have coughing continuing in any pig flows, please let me know. We can use Pfizer, Alpharma, and BI for help in diagnostic assistance. I apologize in advance for delayed promptness in dealing with your requests. You most likely will have to follow my directions in obtaining appropriate diagnostic samples. (Serums and tissues) I am grateful most of you swine guys/gals have the necropsy kits necessary to obtain requested tissues. Incidence of umbilical hernia in swine has been elusive for me.
